The Coworker Story

So this, unlike my usual posts about my coworkers, is actually kind of scary. It's a second-hand account, so I don't have the exact details, but it was enough to make me want to hug my kids after I heard it and not let go!

A coworker of mine was at the store a couple of weeks ago with his wife and kids. One of them got away (this is where I'm not clear), either she wandered off, or he wasn't paying attention, and someone grabbed her. When he noticed she was missing, he went right to the manager of the store, and it is SO lucky that he did.

The manager immediately made an announcement that they were closing the store because a child had been abducted. They began searching the store, and finally found her. She was in one of the bathrooms, with half of her head shaved, and a bag of different clothes on the floor next to her. The announcement must have spooked whoever it was that took her, because as far as I know, they didn't find anyone else in there.

These are the kinds of things that you know, on some level, that they happen, but you never expect them to happen so close to home. Whoever it was that got ahold of that little girl.. had plans. They had that bag of clothes with them, they went to that store intending to take someone's baby away from them, for heaven only knows what reason. I am so thankful that they did find her in time, and so sad for those who maybe didn't notice soon enough, or did one thing differently, and maybe lost their baby forever.

Oh my gosh. This made my stomach turn. Oh wow. I'm so happy he went to the manager and that the manager actually did something about it.

I've heard this story before, but the girl had been raped when they found her. I'm glad this story had a different outcome! I can only imagine the terror this father experienced.

Parents need to shackle their kids to them when they're out in public any more...

I've heard variations of this story, but always ending with the child being found in alone in a bathroom with a partially shaven head... I think it's awesome how stores have stepped up with security procedures to prevent the abductors from removing children from the stores once an alert has been set. Also, I think this is the sort of thing we will see more and more of as groups like NAMBLA empowering the pedephiles.

I'm SO glad they found the little girl!

Parents: when you go into a big box store - note what clothes your child has on: especially the SHOES! Shoes are the hardest thing to switch out/replace for child abductors.
I'm glad the store they went to had such procedures in place - when I worked for Target, that is exactly what we did.
Every time we had a code come in, I would always check the bathrooms then guard the front door - every time in my experience, the child was located, but I always dreaded that time when something horrible happened.
Sending hugs to you and your little ones today.
luv,
mo
