MaNiC mOnDaY - SNAP!
I'm sure I won't be the only one out there to come up with this one, but the first thing I thought of when I saw the theme for this week was the expression "Oh, Snap!" I had a look-see over at Wikipedia, and this is what I learned about this expression.
"Oh, snap! is an expression popularized by Biz Markie in the 1989 song "Just a Friend". It has since entered the mainstream as an expression of disbelief. It has also entered use as acknowledgement of a diss by third parties, to heighten the feeling of disrespect and insult. "Oh, Snap!" has been known to be used as another way of saying "zing!" It may also be used as an expression of shock or amazement. It is also a form of salutation."
I couldn't believe that this expression was coined almost 20 years ago! It seems to have come back into everyday usage a lot lately, I'm not sure exactly why. But I have noticed people saying it quite a bit in the WoW community, at least on my server, when the burns start flying back and forth on the chat channels. The power of the 80's will never die! :)

Yeah for the 80's!!!!
I used to love that "song".
I have an excuse that I never heard of Oh Snap ! I don't know Biz Markie. To inspire myself for MM I looked in my dictionary and stumbled over the meaning of "snap away" other husbands !
My daughter watches That's So Raven and she says that a lot. :)
Great post!
Happy Monday.
Oh dear.. I watch a lot of That's So Raven too.. I don't know what it is about that show!!
I've never played WoW... I am afraid that I would never emerge.
Thims - It's a fight for me, but somehow I manage every day :)
I love learning where expressions come from. Good MM post!
Oh Snap!
Now I've learned something -- on a Monday, too!
Curse you, cute blogging minion for actually filling my grey matter with snap crackle pop!!!
Okay... maybe three cups of coffee should be my limit on Monday morning....
cheers,
mo
Didn't know this. Cool and bitchin' where the hot words back in my day. Thanks for the history lesson on "Oh Snap". Have a great MM!
I didn't realize it was so old either...
Bitchin'! No, I've never heard of it...But it's a cute phrase!!!
My kids have been using this for awhile. I didn't know where it came from tho.
Dang!!
Later Y'all
Learn something new every day :)
My daughter has changed it up a bit so around here it's "Oh snap, son!" whenever it is used as as a bit of a zing.
I've got a lot of people at work using it, too, even though it's not a "normal" phrase for a dispatch center! It does seem to work as a bit of a stress reliever for us, though, so I guess that can be added to its list of uses!
