MaNiC mOnDaY ~ Silence on the Soapbox

I haven't had a lot of time to blog lately, but I have seen a few places advocating a day of blog silence today to honor the people who died at Virginia Tech recently. As you can see, I'm not one of them. I believe that these people should be honored, but not with silence. Their deaths were tragic and un-called for, this is true. But.. *gets out soapbox*

If we're going to be silent for each day that 32 people die, we'd never say anything again. People die EVERY DAY. Some from natural causes, most from other things. Where was the day of silence for the guy who took his own life in my neighborhood last week? Where's the silence for the children who are abducted and never seen again, for the innocent people who are in the wrong place at the wrong time when a gang drive-by takes place, for the convenience store clerk who just couldn't get the cash drawer open fast enough, for the child whose mother threw them in the dumpster after they were born because her life was complicated enough already, thank you very much????

Be silent in your heart if you feel the need to be, but do NOT be silent on your blogs. Do NOT be silent when you vote, do NOT be silent when your words could do some GOOD! We are surrounded by tragedy EVERY DAY, people. What makes one event so special that we're all going to shut up for a day? The media coverage? I hope not. I hope that we, as a blogging community, as a nation, as a human race are not going to let the media dictate our actions, in this and in everything. Remember and honor the dead, ALL of them.

I agree with your comments, and there should not be silence on the soapbox. I took today's request for silence to mean a moment of silence. to pray, to remember, to think for a moment, on how we can make a difference, and to listen to our voice within.

This is the best silence post I've seen!

Very well written. We can all interpret "silence" differently: Reflection, "soapboxes", actions, etc. Great job with your interpretation.

The one thing you can guarantee about life is that things will change and sometimes those changes will be horrid.

Your article is perfect and grants honor and respect to the dead without being maudlin or corny.

Excellent essay Asara. Whether being silent or speaking out, the blogosphere is acting as one.
